This opener is brought to you by ChatGPT. ‘Tis good for SEO! Now, for my own voice:
Being well-prepared and efficient is a life goal. Which is why I’ve been on the lookout for the ideal travel set. I want to be able to pack quickly and be able to find what I am looking for once I reach my destination. Organization and smart features that make the hassle of travel easier, are a huge priority. While I don’t travel extensively at the moment, I believe in being ready for any potential changes in the future. I have been through emergency situations where I had to pack and leave the house immediately, so it’s better to have a system and something practical, rather than stuff everything into a garbage bag. But ideally, I would be packing for a nice, planned vacation!
Last year I had the good fortune to go on three trips! That’s not typical! As a child, I was able to go on a few trips, but not as many as the typical family. If you can believe it, I have never been outside the country. It makes sense if you know my background. My mom was disabled as a result from a brain tumor and stroke. In addition to that, she was jobless due to her health, limited mobility and the fact the motherhood unexpectedly sprung up on her. She couldn’t drive (affected vision due to tumor) and needed assistance to walk. So traveling was just not a reality for us. Now as an adult, it’s a logistics issue. Where I go, I’d want to make sure I’d have the best experience possible… which is expensive. While it sounds high maintenance, I’d want everything to be a high quality experience for comfort and safety. Being stranded is the worst and has happened to me. But budget plane travel is something I’d never do again! It was too uncomfortable to too long of a flight. I got really airsick and I had no relief. Plus, I’d never want to stay at an questionable lodgings. As for logistics, I didn’t adopt a dog just to leave her with someone else for a month. So having someone watch her for an extended period of time, also makes travel difficult. So when I do travel, it’s usually to LA or Vegas. Which to me is fine because they have so much to offer, I am getting the vacation I desire at either place. Though I am really itching to visit Washington state or Oregon! I could take the dog!
Beis is a company founded by Shay Mitchell, a Canadian actress known for Pretty Little Liars, Dollface and You. Her YouTube channel is where her personality really shines! Shay is effortlessly cool and her confidence, style and sense of humor is what has her fans hooked! Not to mention, she can sell us a potato sack and we’d buy it! When she presents one of her travel bags, I am convinced it is the most genius thing ever and I need it. If someone so put-together, made this, then I need to pretend I am also stylish and put-together.
Starting a travel line is something I tried to do. But with no startup funds, it wasn’t happening. But my idea was designing makeup bags with compartments and pockets to make organization easy. So you’re not digging into the abyss that is your bag. Additionally, I also wanted to create bra cases so the cups wouldn’t get smashed in the luggage. I know too well that if a cup get smashed, it never really smooths out. There was a brand called The Brag Company that made them, but it looks like they are out of business. Though I managed to find one of the appropriate size on Poshmark. Another brand needs to create bra cases again and it needs to come in multiple sizes and be crush-proof! If I made them, the company wouldn’t survive. However if Beis did, then it could work!
I know that Beis isn’t even the top-of-the-line luggage line. There are brands that cost a thousand dollars! But for a lot of people, especially myself, this is very expensive! I sat on it for a long time, and when I was able to afford it, I finally made the purchase. I wanted good quality, with smart features and that was stylish! It’s something I’ll have for the rest of my life, and I hopefully won’t ever need to replace them. I came from cloth luggage purchased from discount stores. Before that was a duffle bag! I hope that this is my final luggage purchase because it was a hefty price!
Colors
When Beis first debuted, Beige and Black were the only two colors the bags came in. Black is fine, most of my clothes are black. Even though Black goes with everything, for my accessories and bags, I’d rather have a fun color that I like!
Though the color black is suitable. A black bag really blends in at the baggage claim. You pretty much have to depend on your luggage tag or flair you attached to it to spot yours. However, the advantage of black luggage, you cannot see conveyer belt scuff marks on them. An unfortunate thing that happens to the light colored ones, such as the beige. Speaking of, I really don’t like beige. Don’t take offense beige lovers, not everyone is going to like the same colors and beige ain’t it for me!
Atlas Pink was a color Shay created for her daughter. I’m not a pink girl, but sometimes I happen to end up buying pink things. Atlas Pink is cute and I really like it! (Do I secretly like pink?) I wanted to see more of the Beis items in this shade if they weren’t going to make more. But then came the Slate announcement!
When Slate first came out with the Sport bags in Spring 2023. I could not tell if it was supposed to be gray, blue or in between. That is what made me hesitant about making the purchase. I didn’t want to end up with gray. Well as you can see, it’s not gray. I waited too long and it completely sold out. I regretted it ever since it sold out because the bag itself would have been great for my trips.
Since then, Beis came out with other colors, while I waited for Slate to come back. Berry and Barbie pink were the only ones I was interested in. I am not really a pink girl, but Berry was really cute! However, I couldn’t buy it. It was such an investment for a last minute purchase and I was holding out for blue since it is my favorite color!
I got more and more discouraged when Beis came out with other colors. They released Olive and Maple. Just put it there with beige. I hate those colors. In fact, olive green is my least favorite color ever! We all got different tastes. It’s not for me. I wanted something more my style! I liked the idea of the neon collection, but it’s unfortunate they were limited edition and completely gone for good. I’d rather see a permanent line for fun colors than basics, but I think the rest of the consumers would beg to differ. Basic colors are popular for a reason. When you are a business you have to go with what makes the most profit! Most people would rather look more professional and mature. (Or if I were to word it more honestly, people would rather conform. Not stand out and blend in.)
As much as I like Slate, I wish it was more blue. Everything I own is in aqua, which is much brighter. Slate is a blue-gray that leans on the greener side of blue, much duller than aqua. I have included photos in different lighting, so you can get an idea of what it looks like. If Beis comes out with aqua or any sort of purple or lavender, I’ll have some conflict, as I don’t need any more bags! The little dog has some concern about potentially going on a trip.
Large Weekender, $128At this point, I have only used the Beis Weekender for a trip. I bought it early last year and have taken it to visit people’s houses and on three trips. The rest of the items are brand new to me.
Depending on what you are packing, it can get extremely heavy and very cumbersome to tote around. Because I am from the area where car break-ins are rampant, I insisted on storing all of my valuable items in the weekender and taking it with me to our rest stops. It got to the point where I couldn’t stand hauling it anymore. But that can be avoided since it really does depend on what you are packing. If you are just packing light items, you probably won’t have issues. I had my 15 inch MacBook Pro and that’s all I needed to make it heavy! But I also packed my iPad, all the batteries and chargers, plus anything combustable like hairspray and perfume because I didn’t want to leave them in the car in 100 degree+ weather.
For me, a heavy over packer. I cannot pack everything I need inside this one bag. It astonishes me that people are actually able to! I like to pack many clothing options, shoes and my full skin care and hair care routine, including a my curling iron. There’s just no way I can pack light. I vacation in Vegas, where I might have a few clothing changes per day, so my various wardrobe changes are going to take up some room. I did however, move my clothes from my luggage and put them in the bottom compartment meant for shoes. It was the ticket! I had much more room for whatever bullshit I was packing in my luggage!
Another gripe I had while using it was that it was super hard to close when it was full. It opens like an old fashioned doctor’s bag and the zipper curves. It’s hard to zip through the curve when it’s an overstuffed turkey. I really need to stop overpacking the Weekender because I inevitably need to stuff it with more things on the way. Last time it was snacks I got a road stops.
29 Inch Roller Luggage, $328Why is luggage so expensive? No wonder I got them at discount stores! Nonetheless, if I am going to travel, I want something high quality and doesn’t break my first trip and has some extra perks! I used to have cloth luggage before I upgraded to hard case. While there was nothing wrong with my latest one… there was something enticing about Beis.
I had to go with the largest one, otherwise, I’d find out that the smaller one isn’t big enough and I’ll end up buying the largest one anyway. Sure, I could try to force myself to downsize and pack less. But I’d never do it. I’d just end up bringing a second bag. Get the big one if you have overpacking tendencies. Don’t let minimalist propaganda ruin your ways!
The Beis luggage has features my previous ones did not! More pockets, a comfortable handle, 360 degree wheels, a lock, weight indicator, expander zip, and a handy clip! Not to mention the polycarbonate shell!
My favorite part is that you can attach another rolling luggage or another bag to hang and it clips in place! Because the latch releases so easily, I would not attach anything that can fall and break. I would attach another rolling luggage for easier transport (which is temporary) or something like super light and unbreakable, like a cap. Even though I photographed it with the Cosmetic Case, the case could fall and the contents inside break. Plus that would be packed inside anyway!
Because the airport is dirty and the conveyor belts and mishandling will leave scuff marks all over your luggage. Beis thought of the solution A clear luggage protective cover. It’s a whopping $48 for it. But because you made the investment and chose the color for a reason, you may want to get the protective cover. (Unless you don’t care!) I may end up ordering one if I know I have an upcoming flight.
Inside has a lot more than my basic luggage had. There are extra pockets and straps to hold your items down. My previous luggage has a side zip compartment where I stick my curling iron and the heat proof pad. This Beis luggage has that and much more!
A flat insert with 2 pockets snaps on. With the two attached straps, this keeps everything compressed in. The buckles were simple to deal with.
On the other side, the flap zips closed, like my old luggage, but this one has two pockets on the outside. One is vinyl and is intended for keeping wet bathing suits separate from your other clothing. I might even stash reading material in here.
The expander is such a huge perk! I really needed that after my IMATS trip! I ideally it would be a last resort because the sides are soft.
This suitcase comes with 2 laundry bags. I usually take plastic shopping bags and gallon Ziplocs. The two drawstring bags are indeed helpful because I for sure will use them for laundry! The Ziplocs and other plastic bags can be saved for whatever emergency that comes up. (Shampoo bottle leak, open snack bags likely to spill, etc.)
The wheels are really quite nice! Empty, this thing glides like a dream! It can spin 360 degrees. I don’t think I had this much freedom with my other luggage. Struggles lugging it begone! (The true test will be when I go to SFO!)
The lock is a big perk since I never had one before! It’s just extra security and peace of mind. It won’t stop anyone bold enough to break into your car, but it could deter most thieves to move in to the next bag, as they may want an easier target.
This suitcase has a cushiony handle, none of my previous rollers have had such a luxury. It would make dragging them through the Aria less painful! Not only does the handle have a cushion, but it has a weight indicator. Overweight luggage gets charged and extra fee, which is very annoying. So avoid it the best you can!
The snap insert has a zip compartment. I don’t know what I will use it for, but I will find out during a trip!
The side pocket where I store my curling iron. My old luggage has this too, so I am glad I still have a spot for it!
I am a planner, I could never pack the morning of a trip! This is my experimental packing, to see what fits. I won’t really know how effective anything is until I am actually packing for a real trip! I didn’t bother fake packing everything, I just grabbed the little bags I had on hand!
If you were interested in the bags shown, the ones that are still available are listed on my Benable Travel Collection. The butterfly bag is at Staples, but not sold online. The bra case company is out of business, but I found one at Poshmark. The Kate Spade purse was from many years ago.
Work Tote,$128It’s a large purse. I’ll call it what it is. Now this is the bag I will bring if I need to take my iPad somewhere. My 15-inch MacBook Pro will fit, but not inside the dedicated padded compartment. It has to go in the main compartment and it’s not exactly secure. I have a padded case for it, but it won’t fit in the tote. A 13-inch Macbook Air would fit better. Personally, I would pack my laptop in the Weekender, or leave it at home.
I have a boxy tote purse like this, but what I hate about it is that it does not close at the top. That is asking for a disaster! Spilled items and pick pockets. In fact, I did spill my bag contents during a job interview! The Beis Work Tote closes at the top! Yes! This is what I want!
It also has a key leash, we all know how it is…. some whacko is chasing us and we need to get our slow asses inside. Now our dumbasses can find the damn keys easier! (You can tell I have had issues finding my keys!)
Inside, it also comes with a removable pouch, about the size of the bag. In there you can place documents, if you are using this for work. Otherwise, just put whatever you want inside! This insert snaps to the inside of the bag to make it more secure.
The tote has long handles as well as a cross body option. My mother always taught me to wear my bags cross-body because we are from an area where people will just snatch your purse right off you. So I pretty much only buy bags that have a crossbody strap!
I also like that this bag has the trolly pass through in case you are taking it to the airport. Never put anything important inside this zippered pocket. Not your ID, plane ticket, money, or your phone. That could just unzip and it’s gone. For me I’ll only use it to stuff less important things like tissues! The side pocket was also useful, I stuck a water bottle in there.
The laptop section with magnetic closure. Two small pockets and two pen slots.
For amusement parks, concerts and walking around the park, I wished there was a small, flat bag that was cross-body bag I could carry. Not a fanny pack and not a mini backpack. I remember going to the mall in 2006/7 looking for some options. It was so difficult to find! This was the very solution I was looking for! This is the bag I will be taking to Disneyland and Universal Studios! This is the amusement park bag! When I was a kid, I got reamed by my grandmother for taking a backpack. I need to bring stuff. I need tissues. I need sunblock. I need lip balm. Now, I have a better option available that is not my backpack from school or an outdated fanny pack from the late 80’s. (My mom always wore a fanny pack and it always embarrassed me.)
The biggest selling point was a hidden bag for your water bottle! That completely blew me away! I hate having to carry the damn water bottle and Shay (or whomever the genius is, who thought of it) just fixed that problem, making it a great bag for the park, walking the dog or a festival!
I do love that they have extra pockets! In the front, there is a slip pocket where you can have easy access. I’d put in a packet of tissues, hand sanitizer and lip balm in there. The next pocket is a zip, and has card holders. I am unsure of having something so important in front where someone could just reach their hand in and take your cards. The largest compartment zips all the way but has sides to prevent stuff from spilling out. Inside there is a soft, velvety ruched pocket where your sunglasses would go and another zip pocket inside. There is also a very convenient key leash! In the very back, there is another zip pocket.
I had major regrets when I didn’t buy this in early 2023. I just wasn’t too certain if I should spend the money and I wasn’t sure if it was blue or gray. So I didn’t get it. Then it sold out and I had remorse. I kept stalking the website to see when it would restock. Imagine how overjoyed I was when they announced a whole slate collection in 2024!
If a concert or festival doesn’t require a clear bag, this could be a great bag to take. Otherwise, I think Beis will need to look into designing stadium/concert/festival approved clear bags! As unstylish as clear bags are, we don’t have much of a choice, so might as well have the brand that does make stylish and functional bags, design one.
Here is where I am majorly downsizing. Currently I am using a large case I got from Amazon. It’s great and I can organize all my makeup by type and even fit some skincare. It’s not a terrible bag to take when driving. I take it on trips to LA, and Vegas. But for the airplane, it gets tricky. I went to LA via plane on a smaller jet. It was’t terrible, but I couldn’t take it with me, I had to check it with my luggage. It was fine on this smaller jet because it wasn’t being mishandled or on any machinery. But on an actual, common airline, it would be a major problem! I imagine everything would have been broken! Taking it as a carry-on is tricky because of the various liquids, I’d have to separate them in a clear bag and it’s just a huge hassle. Also my fellow passengers only care about their own belongings, and they will smash the fuck out of my bag just to get theirs in the overheard bin. (Personal experience.) Not great when you have pressed powder products, which I did!
I also have taken this larger case to my friend’s house in Vegas. She does facials, so I of course need to take my makeup with me. Here I am going to her house with several bags, as if I am moving in! I need to majorly downsize so I am not lugging all these bags with me just to go to her house for a few hours! I felt so ridiculous. So I will just take this one Cosmetic Case from Beis and put it in my Weekender, which has my change of clothes.
The Beis Cosmetics Case doesn’t have compartment dividers, so it can fit more without the dividers, but also it’s going to be a mess and I’ll be digging through to find what I need, which is what I want to avoid because it makes me take longer to get ready that way.
The inclusion of a brush holder is welcome. It even has a plastic cover so you don’t get the case dirty! The mirror is cleverly designed because you can prop it up two ways, depending on what angle you need. (Or you can just hold it) I had a lit mirror that magnifies that I take. It’s just too bulky and impractical. But some hotels have the audacity to not have a makeup mirror installed. In future trips, I will go without the lit makeup mirror (that stopped lighting up) and rely on the Beis mirror and the window.
Size comparison of my Amazon cosmetic case and the one from Beis. I don’t *like* having to downsize, but sometimes I really have to.
Here is my experiment on how much I can fit:
Side-by-side you can see a major size difference. Which is what I am going for because I need to pack it inside the luggage.
This is what I’ll pack on a usual trip. I don’t use the brush holders anymore since it makes the bag too overstuffed and it won’t zip properly and everything falls out. (It has happened. I seem to have a hard time leaving the house.)
I packed my larger case as if I was going on a trip. Then transferred stuff to the Beis Cosmetic Case. I had some stuff left over from the larger bag, but it was fine. I don’t need to use absolutely everything I pack! I really over do it with the lip colors!
How I pack this bag: The top compartment has eyeshadow palettes, false eyelashes and makeup removing wipes to create a buffer between my eyeshadows and the harsh world that intends to break them.
The main compartment has all skincare at the top. The larger compartments are for eyes, face, cheeks, and lips.
I tried doing that with the Beis case, but it’s just in there. It is what it is.
It’s not compartmentalized, I prefer to organize my stuff for easy access because I tend to get rushed and frustrated whenever I have to get ready. But the dividers also give you less real estate to work with. So there’s your compromise. But I think I still prefer the dividers because I’ll be digging though and taking stuff out just to find things.
I would stick things like tweezers on the side pockets. When you have a stray hair emergency, you’ll just stress out digging for it, and it of course will be at the very bottom and you’ll find it by poking yourself. You need easy access to them!
I tried sticking my lip pencils in the pocket at the top, but I was trying to film and doing this one-handed.
Previously, I stated that I wanted to start my own travel bag business, starting with makeup bags. I am just in the beginning stage. Without startup money, I must use drop shipping, where I have another company manufacture and ship bags that are printed with my own designs. That way, I am not paying for inventory that doesn’t get sold. Eventually, I’d like to use that money to actually have samples made and have them manufactured. Maybe pay for marketing. That is my weakest point.
On trips, I pack separate makeup bags that carry what I need, by product type. For example, a bag for electronic device charging. One for fragrances. A bag for jewelry. A bag of necessities. I usually take my own cosmetic bags that I designed and had printed. I am introducing them back into my shop again. The company who makes them just introduced vegan leather makeup bags, which are pretty big and will carry a lot. Right now I have these two in my shop: Sea Siren and Metal But Cute
Sea Siren is purple to blue to aqua gradient in a mermaid scale pattern that I painstakingly created, scale by scale, I kid you not! I also designed this electric guitar patterned bag because I wanted something that was my style. I had to explain my style and what genre the items in my shop are… they’re kind metal…. but cute. So I named this bag that. I am going to have this one live in my Work Tote.
These are printed and made in Canada and will also ship from there. The most I did was design the pattern and upload the file online for them to print. I have other patterns I have made in the past, so if these pick up, I’ll upload more!
For trips where we have to go to the airport, we need to use clear bags in our carry-ons to make going through security faster. I’ve found a few on Amazon that went with my style. I particularly like the pink one because it’s structured. It comes it different colors, so if pink isn’t your thing, you have other options. This looks almost like the In Flight Cosmetic Kit from Beis, or the Truffle cases, but it’s a lot cheaper!
The blue ones, while my favorite color, are less sturdy… however this could be good if you are looking to save some space because they can squish down.
Dopp Kit, $48
I am considering getting the Slate Dopp Kit, however the price with shipping and tax makes me halt! It’s $48, but with tax and shipping it becomes $59.73. So $60 for a toiletry bag. Wow. I have my rewards where I can get $20 off, or a free item. But I think I should save that $60. Even though I kind of want it.
I have some clear pink toiletry bags from Amazon that already have and I like. What I like about them is that I can store them by need. Dental, Skincare, Shower, Haircare, etc. I think I will go a step further and use my Cricut to make adhesive labels.Because I don’t have the Dopp Kit on hand, I cannot practice packing to see if everything I need will fit inside. I would put in my skincare and dental items in there and makeup in the Cosmetic Case. But for the skin care, body care, dental, etc… I think my current system works. I can just grab the bag I need at the time, instead of digging through one bag. I feel like if I have to fit everything in the one bag, I’d have to downsize and thats not going to fly with me. There is a video short where the creator, Celesta, compares the two to see which fits most and the Dopp Kit was the winner. So if you are definitely looking to take one and only ONE bag, the Dopp kit is it.
I do like that the Dopp Kit has a separate compartment for our toothbrush because that cannot be touching anything else! It also comes with a hanging loop so it doesn’t have to sit on the wet hotel counter top!
Since making this order, Beis has come out with more releases. Some of their newer bags in Atlas Pink, Olive and Maple. As well as a kid’s line. The mini rollers in Slate and Atlas Pink are cute but I can’t think of what I could personally use it for.
On Wednesday, March 20th at 9am PST, they will have an online sale where selected items are 40% off. I will check it out, but I doubt anything on my list will be on sale. But I have my wishlist stored on my Beis account just in case!
On the Beis Wishlist
• Slate Dopp Kit
• 6-Piece Atlas Pink Packing Cubes
• Jewelry Case
• The Large Check-In Luggage Cover
• In Flight Cosmetic Set in Atlas Pink
I don’t have much hope that any of these will be 40% off. I bet it’s just the basic colors in the bags I already have.
How I Pack My Bags
If I was traveling my airplane:
Check in the Roller Luggage
Carry-On my Weekender
Personal Item- Work Tote
I would put my Cosmetic Case in my Weekender, so I can be more sure that nothing will be mishandled and break.
My eyeshadow palettes would be with my inside my purse/Work Tote to be extra secure.
Inside these bags, I have seen skincare being packed in online ads, but I started packing underwear and socks in there instead and it works out well. I put the skincare in the clear pink bags instead.
I am not 100% sold on packing cubes quite yet. I have only used them for 1 trip so far. I got these affordable ones off Amazon. I am curious to see if the Beis ones will impress me, or if I’ll just spend more money on something I don’t need.
On road trips, I actually take a mini cooler with me. I will freeze a couple of water bottles to keep my water, energy drinks (and any sodas I buy on the road) cool. Bravo Farms, Eddie World and Terrible’s Road House are stops I look forward to! Lugging the cooler around in a Vegas hotel is actually very cumbersome. I’d keep them in the car if we didn’t need water in the hotel room.
In every bag, I always hide an AirTag!(I also keep one in my car!)
This should help you in case the airline takes your luggage or if thieves take your things. Sometimes the staff/authorities are less than helpful, but at least you know what country your stuff is in!
Beis Shipping and Rewards
For my order, which included the largest item they offer, shipping took a week because it ships from New York and I am in California. This will vary based on your location. A week is pretty good considering the size of my order and the size of the box. They packed smartly, and put my other two bags I ordered inside the luggage as I thought they would. Beis offers free shipping on orders over $150, which is pretty easy if you order one of the larger bags or luggage.
My weekender was sent in a polybag, which was fine. Even with rough shipping, there was nothing to break!
Your Rewards points will not be automatic. The points arrived in my account 7 days after my purchase. So I made a new purchase then, taking $20 off my next order. If you are trying to save money, but want to buy all the things, you could space our your orders like that and redeem the rewards, (which will take a week.) If you want more dollars off with your points, they unfortunately need to spend more. You rank up based on how much you spend per year. The information is all on this page. You can also save up points to redeem free items, which is pretty good.
Also note that your points will expire. Unfortunately I never redeemed my points from the year before and it disappeared.
I earn points for a referral, so if you purchase, please consider using my link here!
Beis has other bags of interest, I would want to buy them in Atlas Pink or Slate. (Or perhaps a new fun color they come out with!) They released new items while I was writing this blog post and they did produce existing bags in new (but existing) colors… and they chose Atlas Pink as one of them! Currently, I am eyeing the clear bags as well as the packing cubes. The Cosmetic Case that is double sided looks practical. That is a good bag for on-the-go to keep with you.
I have everything I use listed on my Benable account. Depending on the vendor, I may or may not make affiliate money if you make a purchase.
I hope I do get a chance to test out by going on a trip this year. I lucked out last year with a few trips. Currently with ailing family circumstances, I am unsure. If I go anywhere, I would need to bring the dog. Looks like Buttercup needs her own travel bag. Thankfully she doesn’t require a lot of stuff!
Shown above is the shipping box and how my items were packed. I think they did a great job making sure everything is protected during shipping!
