Today I have a multi-review with Hip Dot’s Follow The Leader palette in collaboration with KoRn. Two hot sauces: KoRn Here To Slay by Heatonist and In Flames x Heartbeat Hot Sauce Co’s Touch of Red- Xtra Hot Habanero. I also talk a bit about Sick New World coming to Las Vegas this May, and my mini KoRn tour in Bakersfield. Finally, a few photos of the Belching Beaver Deftones Beer! (No review on that one because my review is: “tastes like beer.”)
It’s been 25 years since the release of KoRn’s Follow The Leader. To celebrate, KoRn collaborated with Hip Dot, who is known to do some pretty interesting collabs (Cup O’Noodles, anyone?) The 8th grader in me was screaming! The eyeshadow palette was packaged in a CD jewel case and also released was a set of three enamel pins, sold separately.
Hip Dot comes out with many fandoms and sometimes odd collaborations. In 2021, they had a whole collection with My Chemical Romance. I thought it was cool, I like their music but wasn’t a big enough fan to actually buy it. But then Hip Dot went and teased one of my favorite bands… there was no resisting the Korn Follow The Leader palette. That was an instant buy. I honestly hope that this will be a trend with Hip Dot. They’re really fun and I’d love to collect stuff from my favorite artists.
A few days after the Korn palette released, Hip Dot also teased the Evanescence palette. I knew it would be blue and black based on the album cover. Even though I like the band, I am not huge on wearing blue eyeshadow. If I end up getting it, it will be because they came out with something else I want and am trying to fill my cart for free shipping! It makes sense because Korn and Amy Lee of Evanescence collab often and both bands have toured together. In fact, they are headlining this year’s Nu Metal festival! I have to wonder if Hip Dot’s collab is just with the two, or if they plan on collaborating with more bands featured at Sick New World. I can see myself collecting them if that’s the case.
I am attending Sick New World this May and I cannot tell you how much I am looking forward to it! I have already started packing. Three of my all-time favorite bands are playing plus a bunch others I like. I have 13 bands on the must-see list. We’ll see how that goes depending on the set schedule as well as me just wanting to walk around or being caught in an unbearable line. Thankfully, I am not one of those people that have to be in at the barrier, so that’s going to allow myself a lot less stress! If I can hear it, I will enjoy it! I will have a “What I Pack For A Music Festival” post again. I have an old post for Bottlerock, Outsidelands and Aftershock. But that was a few years ago and it may be time for an update!
I liked When We Were Young’s 2022 lineup, but was very interested and considered going to 2023’s lineup because these bands I loved when I was actually a teenager! But I didn’t get tickets, and I’m glad because Sick New World was announced and there’s no way I would be able to afford to attend both WWWY 2 and Sick New World! It was $700 for two general admission tickets! I am glad it’s Vegas because I am already very familiar with it, however… it’s Vegas. It’s the fucking desert and too hot to survive a full day in the sun. I am dreading the heat!
I have be clear because people are insane. The “Staying Home” comment is not pandemic related. It’s just that staying at home is lame as opposed to going to a concert.
If you are here looking up resources for SNW, I have some for you. Of course this is the very first Sick New World, so we don’t have any past experience. However, it is brought to you by the same production company as When We Were Young and on the same festival grounds. So their past experience may be similar. Hopefully there will be no emergency that will cancel the event! We all thought WWWY was too good to be true and then they had to cancel Day 1 for safety reasons (high winds). Honestly, it was a good call on their part. We can’t have a stage collapsing on people! As far as the layout, we expect it to be similar. Based on the merch line at WWWY, I’d try to go for it first thing if the line looks tolerable (that is, if you want anything.) Otherwise, my first stop is getting the locker and then looking for food!
Sick New World on Reddit- from there you can also find the fan-made Discord server link (No ticket resale postings allowed on the Discord)
A Reddit User’s Experience with WWWY- really helpful info!
Now for Hip Dot’s KoRn collab. When I saw this on DupeThat’s TikTok, I stopped right there and went to HipDot’s site on my phone, while still in bed and ordered it. No fucking way am I going to waste a second! I loved this band since the 8th grade when their debut album released. Here you can see Head modeling his look on his Instagram.
Hip Dot has their own descriptions, which wont be the same as mine. All of the shade names are appropriately songs from the album Follow The Leader.
Seed- Matte Warm Bisque.
On me, this is a blending out shade that goes blends out the crease.
It’s On- Matte Brown
It may be standard, but it’s necessary. It’s also pigmented.
Children of The Korn- Matte Vanilla
On most people, this might be a good brow bone highlight shade. On me it doesn’t do much as a highlight.
Got The Life- Metallic Copper.
This single shade saves the palette from being too cool. I like this for the middle of the lid. I think the palette could also benefit from a matte version of a shade this warm.
Freak On A Leash– Matte Black.
Super pigmented black. Has the Korn logo imprinted and I will try and preserve it!
Pretty– Silver Glitter.
Chunky silver glitters.
Dead Bodies Everywhere- Gunmetal Glitter.
These glitters are pretty chunky and I am afraid to get them in my eyeball.
My Gift To You– Color-shifting brown to teal.
Very much like MAC’s Club.
This palette has me wanting a shade in between Seed and It’s On. Something warm to blend them together. I go to Jeffree Star’s Orgy palette and Pricked to help me out with the Korn Palette. My brow bone and transition needs more shades for blending. The glitters are rough chunky glitter. I personally prefer glitter in a liquid eyeshadow formula so it sticks. I can see black and silver glitters falling onto my cheeks, so I’d recommend using a glitter primer to help adhere them better. I am also terrified that they’re going to get in my eyeball.
Aesthetically, it goes with KoRn’s vibe and their album covers. They’re usually black, tan, brown and gray. I feel like they captured the color story right. Plus when the guys wear makeup it’s usually a sooty eyeliner in black. This one is pigmented and I can see them using it.
In typical Jessica-fashion, I cannot find Follow The Leader or Life Is Peachy! But I found Issues with no front to it. I wanted to compare the cover of the actual Follow The Leader CD to the Hip Dot one. The cover art looks to be the same. The Hip Dot insert is printed on metallic paper, giving it a special touch. Unfortunately, I couldn’t capture it in a still photo. The cover features original artwork from Todd McFarlane Entertainment. Revolver has an article with photos of the original concept sketches done by the artist, Greg Capullo. If you are unfamiliar with Todd McFarlane, he is a comic book artist who has his own line of collectable toys. He also produced the 1997 film, Spawn, which has an amazing soundtrack filled with really cool collabs between artists Korn has a song called Kick The PA with The Dust Brothers.
KoRn Here To Slay by Heatonist
If Deftones can have beer, Korn can have hot sauce! Now all I need is for Papa Roach to have a food or beverage product! (Maybe CKY too?)
The first ingredient is corn. I am slayed. Super fitting for obvious reasons. If you are afraid of heat, this is not hot, it’s just got a bit of a kick. Though I could be talking to people who thinks black pepper is hot! For me, it’s not hot at all! It’s a really delicious, tasty taqueria quality sauce that needs to be poured on everything. As you can see from some of the photos I have already gone through a lot of it, that I will want to order a 2-pack next time!
The ingredients are: Onion, corn, distilled vinegar, jalepeno, pineapple, serrano pepper, chipotles in adobo (chipotle peppers, water, tomato puree, vinegar, salt, sugar, garlic, canola oil ) garlic, lime juice, canola oil, cilantro, sea salt and cumin.
The first hit is the smoky flavor, a sour pop from the vinegar and then a sweet citrusy flavor brought to you by the pineapple and lime. It’s got a bit of spice, nothing scary. The spiciness lasts like 20 seconds depending on your tolerance. It’s very delicious! I highly recommend this sauce! It comes in a box that is gift-worthy, so I may consider this as a gift for any Korn fan! You can purchase this on Heatonist’s website, one for $12 or a 2-pack for $24.
Can you believe this is the first time I saw KoRn live? I’ve been a fan since 1994/95 and it wasn’t until 2019 that I saw them!
If you weren’t already aware, Jonathan Davis has a pet accessory brand called Freak On A Leash. You can watch Jonathan Davis himself on Tik Tok explaining the concept behind Freak On A Leash. This past Aftershock, the first 100 fans in line that made a purchase were able to meet Jonathan at the Take Me Home booth. Unfortunately there was traffic on the way to Sacramento and I missed the opportunity, though I tried! You can see in my video, how long the line was when I arrived.
If you’re here for the Korn content, I hope you can appreciate my mini-Korn tour in Bakersfield last summer. I’m considering it mini because there was only two things to see because I didn’t know where else Korn related to go. I’ve stayed in Bakersfield before, so I am already familiar with The Padre. I did not know that it’s famous for being haunted. (I don’t really believe that nor did I get any weird vibes.) The only thing weird is the doorless bathroom situation. But before I got to the Padre, I HAD to see Korn Row. It’s just a street sign, but I had to see it and take photos and videos. Unfortunately, I was on the other side of the road and there was the longest train ever crossing! Eventually, I got them and you can see it here on Tiktok! My editing was questionable, but that was before I knew about Cap Cut.
Just next to the hotel is a music store called Front Porch Music. They have a Korn mural for 2019’s The Nothing. I wanted to look inside the store, but I don’t like going into stores without the intent to buy. I am in the market for a bass and an acoustic guitar, but it’s something where I need to find the perfect one, obsess over it and then buy it. I was also at the end of my trip and I did enough damage!
In Flames Forgone and Hot Sauce
I am including my review of the In Flames Hot Sauce because its too short to put in its own blog post and I am already reviewing hot sauce. I realize that KoRn and In Flames fans are not one in the same! They’re different types of metal for one. I am going to edit this post when I get the new album in mid February and insert photos of my autographed CD. I am super excited to receive it!
I ordered the In Flames Habenero sauce from their official merch store. It costs $12 and ships from Canada. True to its name, it will leave you in flames!
Listen, I am the ghost pepper champion. I ain’t no bitch. But this is HOT and I’d definitely include this in the hot sauce feat-of-strength challenge! Maybe as the middle-ground heat contender. It’s so spicy hot that I am screaming like Anders. Anyone can do a real good impression of I, Mask when eating this sauce! The first hit is that it’s hot immediately in your mouth. Ghost pepper will take a bit and burn at the back of your throat and then torture you for the next 20 minutes. This habanero sauce gets you at the roof of your mouth and the effect lasts for about 2 minutes. As for the flavor, if you stop thinking about the heat, it does have a peppery taste from the bell pepper and the citrus hit of the lime. But the most dominant flavor is of the habanero. If the band members have eaten this (and I assume they did!) I am very impressed that Swedish people managed to tolerate the spice! Usually Scandinavian people find spicy food intolerable! They made a sauce that is true to the band name! Not trying this hot sauce is Only For The Weak!
The ingredients are: Bell pepper, habaneros, onion, distilled vinegar, organic cane sugar, sea salt, garlic, lime juice, and canola oil.
You can purchase this hot sauce at Heartbeat Hot Sauce or at Shop In Flames for $12 a bottle.
Sadly, I have not seen In Flames live. I had tickets in 2020, but of course the tour was cancelled. In 2022, they played in San Francisco and then at Aftershock in Sacramento, but I just couldn’t spend the money since I was already going to Saturday’s Aftershock as VIP. If they come to the Bay Area again, I am making it my mission! I. Must. See. In. Flames.
On my old blog in 2002, I wrote that I liked In Flames and the songs I was listening to. Boy, did some gatekeeping guy find me and let me have it! He was compelled to let me know that my taste sucked and that old In Flames is better. This is in 2002, and their 90’s music seemed to be more popular, but the band changed their sound, as many bands have done as they grow. We have to keep in mind that the original members from the early years are not the same members as now. In my experience, there is always some random guy who questions me every time I mention I love In Flames. Always. Without fail. Some random ridiculous weirdo who tells me, “Name 3 songs!” and then tells me I suck because those three songs aren’t the three songs he wanted me to name. Bitch, are you okay?!? Or it’s “Do you like Old In Flames or New In Flames?” What about Middle Ages In Flames? People just cannot let others enjoy anything. Some of these In Flames fans the most aggressive fans ever, attacking others, especially women whom they deem unworthy. It’s not every body who’s a jerk, of course, but reading any comment section would have you question people’s sanity. I am willing to bet that the band members appreciate their fans, especially the ones who have been supportive through their whole career. Old Clayman and new Clayman? I enjoy them both. They seem to be very aware of this “passion” according to Björn Gelotte on Coffee with Ola and here with A&P Reacts and here with Anders. Not reading the comments and being true to yourself seems to be the way to go.
Doing research for this post I ran across this video from Metal Injection. The lead guitarist from one of my favorite bands likes all the things I do: World of Warcraft, Star Trek and Wars, LOTR, Witcher, Dragon Age. He’s an artist himself and is familiar with artists! I don’t know if I should die or propose marriage!
In Flames offered many formats for their autographed albums, I decided to go old school and pick the CD jewel case. We could pick a cardboard sleeve and records. As it turned out, they sold out pretty fast so I was really glad I managed to purchase it when I did!
Deftones Beer By Belching Beaver
I am just posting pictures. There’s no review because I am not a great person to review beer. I don’t mean to scare Björn away, but I just don’t like beer. But I had to buy it regardless because it’s Deftones.
I got these at BevMo, so if you are looking for them, check the BevMo site and see if your local store has them. (Please don’t ask me! I am not the expert on the supply!) There is also a Tequila called Abre Ojos X Deftones Anejo Tequila, it was super hard to get on release. Searching for it, I see that the price is high too high for me personally. Google the name to find it if you must have it. The price seems to vary by site, you must decide how much it is worth to you.
I have a ton of Deftones footage, but it’s too long to upload. But I do have these photos from Aftershock in 2018, when Deftones headlined and had their own beer garden area.
These are not the only bands that have food and beverage brands or collaborations with brands. Maynard Keenan from Tool has Caduceus Cellars in Arizona. Les Claypool of Primus has a winery that used to be called Claypool Cellars, now called Purple Pachyderm in Sebastopol, CA. Also Metallica and Slipknot have their own branded liquor. I found this article with a list of more liquors. I am not a big alcohol person, so I won’t review them, but I am letting those interested know that they exist!
I am looking forward to Sick New World in May! It is the highlight of my year! I am sacrificing other concerts because I feel like the tickets cost enough to where I cannot justify spending $100+ on another concert. But you know what? That’s fine because three of my favorite bands are playing, plus a ton of others I really like! When I go to Sick New World in Vegas, I will be going back to Area 15 because it was really fun! I have three Tik Tok videos on it. They have a store called Wild Muse where I wanted to buy everything! I am going back to get this guitar bag, which I am hoping they still have! It costs $50 for anyone wondering. I won’t be taking that bag to the festival, clear bags get you in the door faster, so I will be doing that. Stay tuned for what I pack inside my festival bag. That will be up in May!
